However, the government has already stated that choosing Tendulkar for ''Bharat Ratna'' would require tweaking of criteria that has been laid down for the country''s highest civilian honour.
The ''Bharat Ratna'' was started in 1954 and has so far been given to 41 eminent personalities, none of whom is a sports person, the reason being the criteria for the coveted honour.

Indian World Cup winning Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had said “Yes, 200 per cent, because he is an ideal candidate, he has served the country for 21 years with a few more to come. As a cricketer, you know, if he doesn’t get it, then I don’t think there’s anyone who’ll get the Bharat Ratna ever,”.

As the demand for bestowing India’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna on cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar is growing since the Indian team won the 2011 World Cup, the union sports minister Ajay Maken on Friday said that his ministry would ask the home ministry to include sports in the criteria for giving Bharat Ratna.
“Bharat Ratna is given to people for eminent work in the field of art, literature, social service, science and technology but sports is not included. The sports ministry now wants sports to be included too,” said Maken.
“We want India to do well in Olympics and other international events, the sportspersons must also be considered for this honour. And if any sportsperson gets Bharat Ratna it would be a matter of pride for all Indians. We will take up this issue with the home ministry,” the minister added.
The government has said that awarding the Bharat Ratna to sportspersons would need tweaking of criteria that has been laid down.
The Bharat Ratna was started in 1954 and has so far been given to 41 eminent personalities, none of whom are sportspersons, because of the criteria.
Demands to give Tendulkar theBharat Ratna have been made quite some time now. Everyone from politicians to film stars have endorsed it.
After India won 2011 Cricket World Cup, the call for decorating the batting maestro has been gained momentum with the Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni, his other team colleagues and several Bollywood personalities also supporting the demand.
The Maharashtra assembly too passed a resolution a few days ago recommending the highest civilian honour for Tendulkar.
